The Wharton Welcome Weekend… One could clearly see that the name was made up by a poetic soul with a solid grounding in the likes of Joyce and a thorough familiarity with the use of alliteration in the English language. On Thursday, April 15, I was able to escape the dungeons of finance and make my way down to the Eldorado of West Philly. There, I thought, the streets will be paved with McKinsey offers, students will be cheerful and encouraging, the staff wise and helpful and the “other two schools” will look with envy and amazement as Whartonites will strive for, and achieve, ever greater teamwork and cooperation.
I got to Philadelphia at around 4 pm. During the train ride from NYC, I managed to meet two other potential MBA 06ers, and we spent the time in a great discussion of what is it that we want to do after Wharton… The possibilities seem endless indeed…
The events piled on fast and thick. Wave upon wave of people washed over me and I introduced myself endlessly and made sure to repeat the other person’s name to remember it better but to no avail – the next day I inevitably found myself uncomfortably shaking hands with the people whose name I was assumed to know.
Thursday started with a wine & cheese reception where I met up with some folks I knew from the February Wharton Winter Welcome Weekend (once again, alliteration galore) as well as from the NYC get-togethers. The Whartones performed a few numbers, after which most of the crowd headed down to the Pub. My hat is off to the creators of this tradition. It is a wonderful way to unwind and relax after pretty much anything. The beers on tap are great and the pizza has never tasted better. I can see already I will be a regular.
My night ended there. Having not gotten much sleep the previous night, I decided to head to Club Quarters for a good night’s rest, so that the next morning I would be able to take on the torrent of experiences that is Wharton with a rested mind and body. To be continued…
